SALARYMAN is a dance piece by Ryota Maeda. It is conceived as a dance solo, but Maeda also choreographed a version for several dancers for the performance at the ManiFestival in the ACUD Theater.
A man works as a salaryman (office worker) in a Japanese company that habitually ignores labor regulations: long working hours, no overtime pay, no other social contacts possible. Every day in Japan, the man takes the crowded train during rush hour.
To overcome this reality, he escapes into another world with a comic (manga).
The comic he reads takes on a life of its own.
Can the salaryman build his own identity that is not predetermined by the identity of the community?
